Flinders Street Station
The Flinders Street Station precinct development proposal is centered on the need to activate the area by creating an enriched urban experience through an iconic design solution. The primary design driver is a desire to create effective human scale connections through visual interaction and pedestrian activity. Capitalizing on a symbiotic relationship between people and visual access, the design concept uses light and visual transparency to create intrigue. Emphasizing holistic sustainability, the proposal addresses economic, social and ecological sustainability, enlivening the site by creating a destination for living, working, spending, and accessing Melbourne and beyond. Amenities in the surrounding area are complemented through a viable economic program that restores and gives new life to the heritage features of the site. Social design is a key consideration and driver for the selection of programmatic elements and of detailed design decisions. An elevated park provides a platform for enhancing connections with station history, and re-centers the pedestrian connections throughout the site from the surrounding city, emphasizing evenly distributed, 360 degree access. Innovative applications and integration of sustainable technologies, including intensive green roofs and dual skin facades, are integral to the concept’s success.
